Another cadre of early childhood education teachers will get the opportunity to move up the professional ladder, due to a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Education Fund (CHASE) and teachers training institutions on November 11. The ceremony was held in the Norman Manley Suite at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston this morning.

Sprinter Michael Frater is the 2014 recipient of the Courtney Walsh Award for Excellence. Frater was honoured at the annual Courtney Walsh Award ceremony at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on October 16 but unable to attend due to injury. The award was received on his behalf by Laurel Smith, a member of his management team.
‘A PROPOSAL BY TELEPHONE’: Award winning Classical performer Dawn Marie Virtue, dramatizing a number from the opera of the same name – ‘The Telephone’ – to the delight of the audience at ‘A Classical Evening with CHASE’, concert, hosted by the Culture Health Arts Sports and Education Fund (CHASE) at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston on Sunday, July 20. The event is held each year by CHASE to showcase the talents of its scholarship awardees under its Arts and Culture portfolio.
Soft lights, bouquets of flowers and a dazzling black and gold themed décor transformed the Jamaica Pegasus ballroom into an operatic theatre last Sunday (July 20) when the Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Education Fund (CHASE) hosted ‘A Classical Evening With CHASE’. The concert is held each year for special guests of the organization, to witness and enjoy the performances of some of its scholarship awardees and beneficiaries, under the Fund’s Arts and Culture Portfolio.

In recognition of CPR Week being celebrated by the Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ), members of staff of the CHASE Fund were this morning given a first-hand demonstration of how to administer cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), in the event someone near to them collapses, stops breathing or stops breathing normally.

The St. Joseph’s Hospital was presented with a new utility vehicle, courtesy of the CHASE Fund, during a handover ceremony at the hospital on January 29.
According to Gail Hudson, CEO of St. Joseph’s Hospital, the vehicle will be used for transporting specimens and goods. She noted that the hospital had been operating without a vehicle for the last two years.
Heart Foundation’s Life-Saving Screening Gets a Boost from CHASE

The Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ) life-saving screening services have received another boost from the CHASE Fund which has facilitated the purchase of a Stress Treadmill and three 24-hour Holter Monitors at a cost of just under J$5.4 million. The donation was officially handed over on Monday afternoon by the Project Manager of the CHASE Fund, Mrs. Paulette Mitchell at the Foundation’s Beechwood Avenue address.

West Indies Players Association (WIPA) president Wavell Hinds, is the 2013 recipient of the Courtney Walsh Award for Excellence. He was honoured at the annual Courtney Walsh Award ceremony at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on October 23.
Former West Indies cricketer, Wavell Hinds, has played on and captained numerous Jamaica national cricket teams, from age-group level upwards to the senior outfit, contributing to many title successes.
Off the pitch, Hinds has worked his way through the ranks to become president of the regional players’ representative body, WIPA. He is also chairman of selectors for the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) Under-19 team.
The other nominees considered for the award were: veteran netballer Nadine Bryan; Olympian Michael Frater and Paralympian Alphanso Cunningham.
Dr. Carlton E. Davis, Chairman of the CHASE Fund presents Paralympian, Alphanso Cunningham with is plaque. Cunningham was one of four nominees shortlisted for the Courtney Walsh Award for Excellence. The award ceremony was held at the Jamaica Pegasus on October 23.
Ambassador Courtney Walsh, in whose honour the award is given, acknowledged the distinguished athletes like Arthur Wint and Herb McKinley who he said went before him and laid the foundation. “We should keep reminding our young athletes like those who are here with us tonight of these stalwarts who were the ones that paved the way for us”, he said.
The Award, which was inaugurated in 2005, is administered by the CHASE Fund, and recognises outstanding achievement in a sport; representation at the national level, notable community service and a high level of integrity, national pride, dedication, decorum, humility and discipline both on and off the field.
Past winners of the Award include cricketer James ‘Jimmy’ Adams in 2005; Olympic Gold Medalist and Hurdler Deon Hemmings-McCatty in 2006; netball champion Elaine Davis in 2007, cricketer Nehemiah Perry in 2008; Brigitte Foster-Hylton – hurdler and 2009 IAAF World Champion (2009); Aleen Bailey, 2004 Olympic Gold medallist; hurdler, Dr. Neil Gardner and Olympian, Veronica Campbell Brown.

In its 10 years, CHASE has expended some J$71million for specialist training programmes mounted under the auspices of the Ministry of Health; and scholarships to promising practitioners in various health-related disciplines.

The development of appropriate physical facilities for students of the arts has been another priority for CHASE, in its ongoing quest to transform lives. The Phillip Sherlock Centre for the Performing Arts at The University of the West Indies, and the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, as well as the music rooms and libraries at numerous primary and high schools across the island have been refurbished and equipped as part of this thrust.
The Performing Arts category of the annual Festival of the Arts, mounted by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) as part of the national independence celebrations annually, has been a major beneficiary of funding support from the CHASE Fund, given the JCDC’s influence in the retention of our culture through its work with teachers, students, and community groups across the island.
