More than 105 arts students, many of them graduates of the Edna Manley College, have benefitted from tuition scholarships granted by the CHASE Fund during the past decade in a wide variety of fields, including—archiving, art education, dance, fine arts, music,  and visual arts. Caenwood Resource Centre – Upgrading for Improved Service Delivery

CHASE Fund

The Caenwood Resource Centre and Day Care Centre is one of 11 facilities across the island whose physical plant has been expanded and upgraded with financing from the CHASE Fund, in order to strengthen their support programmes for practitioners in the field and parents.

Building, Upgrading & Equipping Basic Schools and Resource Centres

CHASE Fund

Performance in many of the island’s basic schools, especially those in remote rural communities, has been hampered by resource constraints.  Schools were housed in sub-standard buildings and operated without vital resource materials and learning tools.

The Jamaican Theatre

CHASE has, over a seven-year period, provided financing support for 46 books covering education, culture and history.  Titles include:  Bustamante: Notes and Quotes and Anecdotes by Ken Jones; Jamaica at the Wicket, by Arnold Bertram; The Rise and Fall of Falmouth by Carey Robinson; Adult Suffrage and Political Administration in Jamaica:  1944 – 2002 by Professor Trevor Munroeand The Story of Hanover by Marguerite Curtin.

Bagatelle Basic: Chase-ing the Dream for a Better School

The Bagatelle Basic School in Mocho, Clarendon has been transformed into a model school eight decades after it was established by community stalwart, Granville Anderson.  The addition of a classroom block, staff room, kitchen and sick bay and the renovation of the existing structure were accomplished by the Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Education Fund, (CHASE), at a cost of $15.2 million.  The handing over ceremony of the new School, took place on Thursday April 26.

CHASE SUPPORTS CRICKET NUTRITION PROGRAMME

Billy Heaven, CEO of the CHASE Fund hands over a symbolic cheque for $5 million to Lyndel Wright, President of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) in support of the JCA’s nutritional programme. The grant is intended to enhance the preparation programmes for the national teams which includes the national senior men and women teams, the U-15, U-17 and U-19 teams. In handing over the funds recently, Heaven noted that optimal nutrition is a critical part of the development effort and is important for peak performance. Mr. Wright said that the Association welcomed the contribution to the national programme, adding that ensuring proper nutrition for young sportsmen and women remained a major challenge for his Association. Approximately $40 million is spent on preparing the different teams annually with the nutrition element being the most important cost factor.

CHASE, UWI Open Cutting-edge Laboratory

A multi-million-dollar, state-of-the-art skills laboratory was officially opened at the University of the West Indies today.  The facility was established by the Department of Surgery at the UWI, Mona, in collaboration with the CHASE Fund and the Medical Alumni of North America.

Nominees Named For 2011 Courtney Walsh Award for Excellence

The Selection Committee for the Courtney Walsh Award for Excellence has released the names of four persons short-listed for the Award.  They are: Stefanie Taylor who has been playing international and regional cricket since 2008; Nadine Bryan a fourteen-year veteran of the Sunshine Girls; Nigel Davis, a Special Olympian who has emerged as a long distance champion; and Dr. Neil Gardner, a hurdler who represented Jamaica at the Olympics in 1996.

CARICOM: Perspectives on its Pertinence in the Twenty-First Century

Prof. Sir Kenneth Hall, hands an advanced copy of the book: “CARICOM: Perspectives on its Pertinence in the Twenty-First Century” to W. Billy Heaven, CEO of the CHASE Fund. The book, which will be launched in April, is an assessment on the role and value of CARICOM written by scholars and policy makers from across the region and edited by Prof. Hall.

Dr. Neil Gardner, a chiropractic neurologist, is the 2011 recipient of the Courtney Walsh Award for Excellence. He was honoured at the annual Courtney Walsh Award ceremony at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on October 19.Dr. Gardner, a former track and field athlete, is noted for his achievement at the High School Boys Athletic Championship where he was the Victor Ludorum champion athlete three years in a row. Between 1991-1993, he was adjudged the event’s 1990s’ athlete of the decade. Dr. Gardner also excelled at the CARIFTA Games competing in high jump, triple jump and the 110 metres hurdles, winning five bronze, three silver and one gold from 1989 – 1993.Dr. Neil Gardner is the 1996 NCAA 400 metres hurdles champion and 1997 NCAA 55 metres hurdles indoor champion – the only athlete to date to have both titles.
