CHASE CEO, W. Billy Heaven, (2nd right) hands over with a new anaesthetic machine to the Mandeville Regional Hospital on November 14, 2017. The Rotary Club of Mandeville initiated the acquisition of the machine which was supported by the CHASE Fund with a $2.2 million grant.

The “Mother and Child” sculpture was given to the Bustamante Hospital for Children by the Hon. Edna Manley in 1964 following the establishment of the hospital. The restoration was finance by CHASE and unveiled on September 25, 2017 by (l-r) Kenny Benjamin, Chairman of the BHC; Hilary Coulton, Public Relations and Administrative Manager; Erma Clark, President of the Friends of the BHC; and Joseph Manley.

The CHASE Fund collaborated with the National Health Fund and the Tourism Enhancement Fund to establish a National Cancer Treatment Centre at the Cornwall Regional Hospital. The Centre, which was officially opened on November 24, 2017, houses the linear accelerator machine (pictured), which delivers high-energy radiation to shrink tumors and kill cancer cells.

The CHASE Fund contributed $2.5 million to the publication of the book “Usain Bolt: Legend” The book was produced in partnership with the Gleaner Company and Ian Randle Publishers. A copy of the book was presented to the CEO, W. Billy Heaven on June 8, 2017 by Garfield Grandison, Gleaner Editor. (L-R) W. The Balaclava Health Centre, renovated with a $14.3 million grant from CHASE was officially re-opened in Balaclava, St. Elizabeth on December 7, 2017.

‘A Road to Excellence: A History of Basic Nursing Education at the UHWI’ which documents the establishment and evolution of the University Hospital School of Nursing, was launched at the UHWI on November 2, 2017. CHASE supported the publication of the book with an award of $1,055,300

The National Chorale of Jamaica perform at Voices for Hospices at the University Chapel on October 14, 2017. The CHASE Fund sponsored the concert which was staged by the Consie Walters Cancer Treatment Centre in recognition of World Hospice and Palliative Care Day.

CHASE Director, Saleem Lazarus stands outside the Dialysis Unit at the Mandeville Regional Hospital. A $24 milion contribution by CHASE facilitated the establishment of the Public Dialysis Unit at the Mandeville Regional Hospital three years ago. Prior to this, some 83.6% of the patients who attended the institution’s renal clinic died without receiving dialysis. Chronic renal failure is an increasingly significant national health issue, as approximately 10% of the growing number of diabetics ends up with this condition. The Unit accommodates 32 patients and serves the parishes of Manchester, St. Elizabeth, Clarendon and St. Ann. A second phase of development is proposed, to cater to an additional 10 to 15 patients.

The band at the Alpha Boys Home & School has a tradition of excellence, given the many nationally acclaimed musicians and singers who have emerged from that institution, among them Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, Lester Sterling, Tony Gregory and Cedric ‘Im’ Brooks, and many others. In 2012, CHASE contributed some $1 million to purchase new musical equipment to upgrade the school’s band.

The cardiac simulator, developed by local scientists, is one of the many simulators housed in the state-of-the-art CHASE Carnegie Surgical Skills Laboratory, which was opened in July 2011 in memory of Dr. Alfred Carnegie, an outstanding Jamaican surgeon. The laboratory is used for basic and advanced training - in all disciplines of surgery - through the use of simulators, telescopes, patient models, cadavers and anaesthetized small animals. The Laboratory, which also offers distance teaching and video conferencing, was established with a contribution of approximately J$25 million from CHASE.

Holland High School, in Trelawny received the sum of $813,300 from the CHASE Fund to purchase equipment for its Music Department and establish a school band, in 2008.

Brightly painted in yellow and royal blue, with three spacious, fully-furnished classrooms; a staff room; sick bay and other amenities for a modern school, the St. Agnes Basic School in Buff Bay, Portland is a stark contrast to the refurbished fowl coop and the one-room, wooden building that served as classrooms for many years.

W. Billy Heaven gets instruction on the sax from a member of the Wolmers Boys’ School band. The Wolmer’s Boy’s School received the sum of $1 million from the CHASE Fund to establish an extra-curricular music programme and start a marching band boost to its music programme in 2008.
